Happy Spring, friends!  This has always been my favorite season of the year, even though I often forget that fact when it’s October and the leaves are brilliant and the air is crisp and cool.  But deep down, I’ve always known that springtime is when I feel the most alive.

The most convincing proof I have of this fact is my kindergarten yearbook, in which my teacher faithfully transcribed my answers to a series of questions about 6-year-old Cassady’s favorite things.  Most notably, my response to “What is your favorite song?” records the simple lyrics of a cheerful tune that I often still hum throughout the months of March – May:

“Spring, spring!  Is in the air!
I can feel it everywhere!”

Those 11 words still make me smile as I recall the child-like wonder that is restored to my soul each spring.  I feel like Anne Shirley during her first trip through the White Way of Delight – eyes open wide, drinking deeply of the beauty that only seems to get richer the longer I take it in.  The first hints of spring always catch me by surprise – tree branches that begin to bud long before the air is warm and friendly, bright green shoots pushing up through the snow-dusted earth.  And then suddenly spring is here, bringing with her blue skies and warm rains and sweet-smelling blooms on every branch or stem. I could spend hours each day carefully studying each new flower that appears in our backyard.

What about you – have you noticed the bravery of the early daffodils as they raise their bright yellow faces to the sun?  Or the sky’s subtle shift from mostly-gray to baby blue as the sun plays peek-a-boo through the clouds? Or the hopeful sound of birds chirping outside your office window, urging you to look up – just for a moment – from your cluttered desk or your glowing computer screen?

If your honest answer to these questions sounds anything like: “Well, sure, I might have noticed all of that if I wasn’t so BUSY in the spring!”, then you are in the right place.  It seems inevitable that “busy” is the word we will use to describe these next couple of months – there are graduations to prepare for, summer vacations to start planning, finals to study for, Easter dresses to shop for, and baby showers and bridal showers galore!

I’ve found that we are often so busy during the spring that we miss the rich beauty of this season and, even more tragically, we miss what God is saying to us through His creation during this time of sprouting and blooming and ushering in new life.   So I created a weekly devotional series called Field Notes from a Wildflower to help us all connect with God through the beauty of nature this spring. For the next six Fridays, I’d love to pop into your inbox with a personal story, a related passage of Scripture, and a simple, concrete action step you can take to encounter God in your own life this spring.  Just drop your email address in the box below and I’ll send you a confirmation email to make sure you’re all set!

I can’t wait to enjoy my favorite season with you!
with love and wanderlust,
Cassady
